The long Tail
Chris Andersen has written a book about future markets. The research lasted for over 2 years and the cooperation of many scientists, business people, thinkers and other authors was needed for this massive undertaking.Publishers are waiting like hypnotized for their next bestseller, film distributors wait for the next block buster, the music industry waits for the next super hit. They are all wrong. The future lies somewhere else. What will happen when a basically indefinite amount of products and services becomes available to all? When the value of all these niche products, which are offered in the internet only one mouse click away, lie way over the top of classical best sellers? The economy is changing totally.Exactly this is happening now. The “long tail” of all the products that may only sell maybe once a year, are turning for many awakened business people into top revenue. Mostly because via the net they can be offered and stocked practically forever, for minimal cost. So called “flops” for a shop may turn into profit for an internet business. Large chains see difficult times ahead, for new businesses new opportunities are opening up.Chris Andersen demonstrates in his book that even one of the largest chains like Wal Mart, can only offer top sellers to their clients. The mainstream client is kind of satisfied with that, but they can never satisfy the individual needs and wants of people. The average cost and number of potential clients for each product within a certain area of the business/shop are the limiting factor when it comes to product range. Even if the sheer impossible range of goods in some stores or shopping centers give us the illusion of a shoppers paradise are in comparison to the overall range of goods available are very limited. The internet on the other side with its near limitless space for Bits and Bytes, fast transaction and new glass fibre technology, with new products such as MP3 players, Digicams and other digital wonders created a market where one can make profits with niche market products which was totally unheard of not too long ago. Products which would have been nearly unsellable a few years back - simply because potential buyers and sellers did now know about each other, can now be easily obtained. Amazon (Reselling of books and in the meantime many other things as well), Ebay (Auctions), Rhapsody (Music), Google (Search Engine) and others are the big names in the business. Thanks to lower (sometimes really low) investment costs and easy (if ones knows how) possibilities to reach possible clients, many small but inventive entrepreneurs find a lucrative income in many business areas.Maybe you have a product that would make someone in India, Australia or France happy? NOW you have the chance to reach this potential client and sell it to them. For many people it is a chance for totally new business ideas and income opportunities.
